Historical Fiction
The juvenile and YA (Young Adult) historical fiction books are now labeled with a special green historical fiction sticker. Historical fiction are not true stories, but fictional stories based on real events.
Tutor.com
A new online program through the Portage Public Library that provides homework support for students in elementary through high school, and even college. At Tutor.com, you get live one-to-one help with a certified tutor. Click on the logo below, or go to online resources (at the left),view by name, and click on local resources. Then scroll down to Tutor.com and click on Portage Library.
Playaway
(audio books)
Digital Audio Players ("DAP")
for children & teens are now available at the Portage Public Library. Playaway is the simplest way to listen to audio books on the go. Each Playaway comes with the digital content already pre-loaded on it. Just add a AAA battery and headphones (or ear buds). Press the button and listen. The best way to search in our catalog for Playaways is by author and put in "Playaway". Look for the red Audio Book stickers on the spine, along with the label

Playaways are located by the children's videos. Bring the Playaway container to the front desk for check out. Make sure to remove your battery and headphones from the Playaway player before returning it to the library. Thanks to the Portage High School class of 1940 for donating the funds for this new collection.
A Young Adult non-fiction collection has been created featuring new titles on topics such as yoga, knitting, screen writing, and gender issues. Located on the bookshelf next to the YA fiction racks, the YA non-fiction collection will continue to grow with books on current, high interest subject matters, but also continue to feature perennial favorites like the "Chicken Soup" series.
- Portage Public Library is dedicated to serving the needs of Columbia County teens, ages 13- 18. Stop in and see new Youth Services Librarian, Dawn Foster, for recommendations on new releases and timeless classics.
- The graphic novel format is growing by leaps and bounds, and now includes non-fiction titles on how to draw manga. We're looking for suggestions on new titles, so c'mon in and give us your recommendations!
- Be sure to check out the South Central Library System databases for homework help. Literature Resource Center, Proquest, and Ebscohost are just a few of the resources available to help ease the homework blues!
