PARENT LITERACY TIP from Portage Public Libray Youth Services

We've been obsessed with numbers lately!  Why?! Because experts say that children need to know 100,000 words "in order to be critical thinkers and strong readers."  How can you help your child achieve that daunting number?  By reading to them every day!  Children's author & reading advocate, Mem Fox, recommends you read 3 stories a day to your child, even if it's the same story 3 times!  Are you ready to take the challenge?  There's no better time to start than today!

The"Pre-K Klub" is over for this school year. We'll be evaluating whether to continue this unique program in the fall.

Pre-K Klub was geared toward area preschoolers currently enrolled in a Portage school district pre-kindergarten program (Head Start, The Little School, Alphabet Express, St. John's/St. Mary's) and homeschoolers but who did not attend weekly preschool story times at the library. Klub met once a month and included Mrs. Foster reading a classic children's picture book and then using "STEM" (science, technology, engineering, math) principles to further the lesson. Kids had a lot of "hands-on" fun with experiments, math concepts, and more.

Stay tuned for more information on Pre-K Klub ....

Youth Services Displays

We're always creating bulletin boards and informative signs in our display case. Be sure to wander around the children's room to see what Miss Janeen has posted in the "TWEEN" area ~

When choosing books for emerging readers, be sure to look for these dots on children's "easy reader" books. The colored dot will be on the spine of the book and is meant to be a recommendation when choosing books for beginning readers.
