PARENT LITERACY TIP from Portage Public Libray Youth Services

We've been obsessed with numbers lately!  Because experts say that children need to know 100,000 wirds "in order to be critical thinkers and strong readers,"  How can you help your child achieve that daunting number?  By reading to them every day!  Children's author & reading advocate, Mem Fox, recommends you read 3 stories a day to your child, even if its the same story 3 times!  Are you ready to take the challenge?

The new "Pre-K Klub" is for area preschoolers currently enrolled in a Portage school district pre-kindergarten program (Head Start, home school, The Little School, Alphabet Express, St. John's/St. Mary's, etc) but who do not attend weekly preschool story times at the library. Klub will meet once a month (as a trial); Mrs. Foster will read a classic children's picture book and then using "STEM" (science, technology, engineering, math) principles, children will participate in an activity that relates to the story. Each month a different story, a different activity, different STEM principles!
