Summer Library Program (SLP)

is finished for the summer!

summer library program poster

It's hard to believe that the Summer Library Program (SLP) is over. Portage kids turned in 100s of reading slips and as a result, 3 charities benefited. Reading slips were tallied and The Columbia County Humane Society, with the most votes, received a $150 donation. Due to the generosity of Waddell and Reed and the Friends of the Library we were able to make a donation to the 2 other charities as well. The Portage Food Pantry received a $100 donation and The Splash Pad received $50.

The"Pre-K Klub" was such a success last winter that we'll be starting up again come September! Stay tuned for more details ...

Pre-K Klub was geared toward area preschoolers currently enrolled in a Portage school district pre-kindergarten program (Head Start, The Little School, Alphabet Express, St. John's/St. Mary's) and homeschoolers but who did not attend weekly preschool story times at the library. Klub met once a month and included Mrs. Foster reading a classic children's picture book and then using "STEM" (science, technology, engineering, math) principles to further the lesson. Kids had a lot of "hands-on" fun with experiments, math concepts, and more.

Youth Services Displays

The  "I SPY" display board in the tween space is worth a look! Find special items and win a prize. Stop by the children's circulation desk for more information.

When choosing books for emerging readers, be sure to look for these dots on children's "easy reader" books. The colored dot will be on the spine of the book and is meant to be a recommendation when choosing books for beginning readers.
